CQT Strategic : Monitoring the current situation
Political Follow-up
Over the past week, there has been more progress on the political front. First of all, through the Groupe de travail sur la fréquentation des arts de la scène (GTFAS), we participated in a dialogue session with the Minister of Canadian Heritage, Pablo Rodriguez. This meeting followed the announcement of the postponement of the National Summit on Arts, Culture and Heritage, which was originally scheduled for January 31 and February 1, 2022.
It was an opportunity to make initial contact with the Minister and to present three measures that need to be developed in order to help the cultural sector, i.e. the renewal of support measures such as the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CESS) and the implementation of better support for individual artists, as current programs are insufficient. There was also discussion of a plan to rebuild the performing arts sector, including details of its recovery. The importance of the role of the Canada Council for the Arts in structuring and building momentum around these issues was also discussed. Obviously, there is still a lot of work to do, but our requests were listened to with openness and interest.
Next, we have been invited to a working session by the office of the Minister of Culture and Communications, which will be held on January 21, 2022. The purpose of this session is to identify possible solutions that will promote a recovery plan that is as predictable and stable as possible. Support and recovery measures will be discussed. However, there is little chance that we will be able to obtain a definitive recovery date at this time. In recent speeches, the government has said that we will have to wait and see what impact, if any, the opening of schools will have on our health care system before we can relax the health measures that are currently in place. As of now, the hospitalization rate remains our best indicator.
Open letter
We have also taken the initiative of writing an open letter in advance of the sharing and reflection sessions that will take place this Friday with the MCC. This text has received the support of many associations in the performing arts sector, and we are happy to join our voices with the goal of lessening the silence concerning the crisis that is affecting the milieu. Our sincerest hope is that these meetings will mark a turning point for the future and be the beginning of a true and ongoing dialogue.

Therefore, we would like to have the opportunity to hear from you and have you express your views on the issues that are of particular concern to you. The CQT will be holding a virtual Agora on January 28 from 2 to 4 pm. This dialogue is deeply valuable, and we hope to see many of you there.
