You may have observed that for this year of 2021, the Conseil québécois du théâtre (CQT) has not set up any initiatives for Black History Month. Due to internal issues generated by the pandemic, we have had to mobilize our resources elsewhere, thereby not leaving much room for such important issues. We felt that it was completely inappropriate to set up a half-baked project but rather more important to underline the fact that the CQT fully recognizes the significance of the work our BIPOC artists, artisans and thinkers, contribute to the makeup of our profession.
Therefore, we decided to take advantage of this time to initiate a meaningful reflection on the place of diversity within the CQT itself, in terms of its committees and activities, and the way it reflects the richness of all cultural expressions, points of view and concepts in the creation and production of theatre in Quebec. After months of being inactive, our diversity committee has now resumed its work as of the beginning of the month and is reiterating the importance of encouraging calls to action from within our community and emphasising the need for us to be more aware of opening our doors to more diversity and increasing multi-cultural representation.
We wish the CQT to be an open space for this reflection and dialogue, which is more inclusive and representative; a trajectory for structuring processes, capable of offering resources and tools to better understand the complexity of issues surrounding inclusion in theatre.
Therefore, the CQT is committed to launching an action plan for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in order to identify strategies and activities which can be carried out immediately...because the future is now!
